Nature & Needs of the Handicapped - An introduction to the study of exceptional children this course presents a comprehensive and up to date survey of professional research, practice and current trends in their education. Topics include: nine specific categories of exceptionality, sociocultural factors, terminology, laws, policies and practices that are consistent with the exceptional children's right to receive an appropriate education in the least restrictive environment.

Resources & Services for the Handicapped: Sophomore Experience #NAME? essential to the handicapped individual & the family & the development of these resources by pioneers in special education. Emphasizes proper referral and use of resources in the schools, rehabilitation facilities and other public and private agencies serving handicapped individuals.

PASPE230. Mental Retardation

An in-depth study of the levels of retardation, including the nature and causes of such. Emphasis will be upon the professional's role in programming for the individual at each stage of his or her development.

PASPE309. Severely Retarded Child

The Severely Retarded Child: Educational Needs and Programs This course provides an overview of educational programming for people with severe and profound handicapping conditions. Educational needs and instructional strategies for these students will be emphasized. Current literature will be reviewed to formulate educational strategies for those with severe disabilities. The ability to apply effective interventions will be demonstrated.

This course is designed for pre-professional and paraprofessionals training to work with the severely and multi-handicapped person in the classroom or in a rehabilitative setting. Emphasis is on the construction and use of free and inexpensive household, institutional, and classroom resources for use with regular teaching materials.

To achieve acceptable level of "normalized" status in community two aspects of handicapped must approach reasonable level of development: 1) persons position, occupation, or primary means of involvement in meaningful activity 2) how that person behaves in performing normal daily/routine duties. Course focus on prevocational and vocational needs of handicapped as well as those supportive skills nec. for achieving acceptable levels of "normal adult adjustment". Nature of course content/emphasis is broad to include sheltered workshops, rehab facilities, work activity centers, therapeutic activity centers, CLSA's, etc.

PASPE313. Teach Slow Learning Ch.

Teaching the Slow-Learning Child - This course helps students to diagnose and deal with some of the learning problems of slow-learning children. It stresses determining reasonable goals, developing relevant activities and using appropriate methods and materials. Students also evaluate a wide variety of materials for slow learners and develop personal resource files.

PASPE316. Nat/Need-Learn Disabled

Nature/Needs of the Learning Disabled - An overview of learning disabilities as an interdisciplinary field and its historical development. Included is a review of the various theories, diagnostic approaches, and intervention strategies.
