The student will demonstrate an understanding of the basic principles of motivation, emotion, personality theories, behavior disorders and therapy, and the psychological processes in small groups. Emphasis will be on relating theoretical concepts to experiential learning in the psychology lab, in exploring the dynamics of behavior.

Topics include: the biological and social foundations of sex roles, intellectual and personality characteristics of women, achievement motivation, and mental health.

The course provides an historical overview of society's response to substance abuse & treatment programs, including the dually diagnosed.

Thanatology: The Psychology of Death and Dying Comprehensive survey includes the meaning of death, the needs of the dying, grief and bereavement, euthanasia, and reincarnation. Discussion focuses on the difficulties and opportunities death brings to us as we face the deaths of our loved ones and of ourselves. Emphasis is on how we might support others through this most critical and powerful of life's challenges.

Focuses on consistency and change in the basic processes of adult development and aging including sensation, perception, learning, memory, intelligence, and personality. Also considers themes such as widowhood and bereavement, sexuality, psychopathology, mental health, and intervention strategies.

Experientially based personal growth experience. Focuses on understanding and involvement and small group involvement and small group interaction and personal growth processes through structured exercises. Emphasis on skill building in interpersonal process.

Psychology of Adjustment and Human Relations The course will deal with some of the problems students must face in their own lives. The major goal is to teach students 1) what psychologists have learned about human behavior and 2) how to use this knowledge in order to evaluate and (if they so choose) to change their own attitudes and behavior. Approximately equal space will be give to psychological information and to practical problem solving. Psychological adjustment and maladjustment will be discussed.

This course will focus on theory and research and will explore the questions of what stress is and how stress manifests itself in the body. The concept of "coping", will be discussed with an emphasis on the most current stress management strategies.

Human Sexuality: Social Aspects Sexual behavior is strongly influenced and in part controlled by social considerations. Students will examin areas such as gender identity, legal aspects of sexual behavior, cross cultural patterns of sexuality and forms of sexual relationships.

This course in intended to acquaint the student with the role of dreams in world history, provide a review of current dream theories and modern laboratory findings, and offer an introduction on how to utilize a dream journal.

An introduction to the learning principles and research methodology of behavior modification. The course will survey techniques as applied to clinical problems in outpatient therapy in mental hospitals and in schools for special children. Ethical problems raised by the practice of behavior therapy will also be considered.

This course is designed to give participants a better understanding of people with disabilities and an awareness of how society regards them. The disabilities addressed range from traumatic physical injuries through progressive diseases and conditions to mental retardation, alcoholism, and emotional disabilities.

Buddhist Psychology I: View, Meditation and Action. This course presents Buddhist psychology, the dynamics of ego, karma and neurotic styles. Students also will be introduced to the stages of awakening, and the Buddhist path of cultivating calmness and clarity, compassion, skillful action, sacred outlook and enlightened activity. Comparison to other meditative traditions and to Western psychotherapies and healing tradition will be made. Also,students will practice sitting meditation and "meditation in action."

These methods have been very effective with subjects who have neurological, psychological, or social handicaps of different kinds.
