An introduction to the study of the administrative process of American government with special emphasis on the role of administrative agencies and the relationship of these to the three branches of government. 

POS 401 - Western Political Theory I 

Teachings of the classical period of political theory from Greeks through the political writings of Thomas Aquinas. 

POS 402 - Western Political Theory II 

Normative teachings of modern political theory beginning with Machiavelli up to the writing of Thomas Aquinas. 

POS 403 - Modern Political Ideologies 

The ideology and practice of communism, facism, socialism, capitalism, and democracy. 

 POS 405 - International Politics of South Asia 

 POS 410 - Theories of International Politics 

A study of various theories of international politics. Issues to be examined include war and peace, diplomacy, and international organization.

 POS 415 - American Foreign Policy 

A study of the domestic and external pressures that guide foreign policy planners. Specific policies toward the Soviet Union, West Europe, China, and Latin America will receive special attention. 

 POS 416 - Global Security Policy 

The study of political efforts to deal with threats to world peace arising from war, nuclear proliferation, international terrorism, the environment, the economy, and related factors. 

POS 417 - Government Organization and Administrative Theory 

A systematic analysis of theories of organization, management, and administration. Special consideration will be given to institutional, behavioral, and psychological factors. 

 POS 418 - Public Personnel Administration 

Procedures and problems of governmental personnel administration. Studies of governmental agencies are encouraged to give students first-hand knowledge of governmental personnel administration. 

 POS 419 - Public Finance Administration 

Activities involved in the collection, custody, and expenditure of public revenue, such as the assessment and collection of taxes, public borrowing and debt administration, the preparation and enactment of the budget, financial accountability and the audit. 

POS 420 - The American Presidency 

The study of the role, powers, and responsibilities of the President within the constitutional system and the changing nature of the presidency. 

POS 421 - Techniques And Processes of Public Management 

This course covers public management within the structure and context of democratic government. Emphasis is on leadership, decision-making, and specific proceses used in the budgeting and personnel functions. 

 POS 422 - Urban Politics And Administration 

An analysis of the governmental function is urban areas. Emphasis is placed on the management role in a political context. 

 POS 423 - Intergovernmental Relations 

A study of federal, state, and local governmental interactions, with and emphasis on the implications of these interactions for public management. 

POS 425 - Special Topics In Political Science 

 POS 430 - National Security Administration And Policy 

An examination of the organizational dynamics, political features, and policy outcomes of the national security decision-making process. Special attention will be placed on the changing role of the National Security Council. 

POS 440 - Comparative Politics 

A study of the basic concepts that are available for illuminating the differences and similarities among various political systems. Case studies will be drawn from the constitutional democracies, communist systems, and political systems in developing nations. 

POS 445 - Comparative Political Leadership 

An application of theories of political leadership in a comparative framework. There will be consideration of conditions leading to effective as well as to failed leadership. Course material will include case studies of individual leaders as well as of key leadership bodies. 

POS 450 - State Executive Politics & Management 

This course covers governors and additional state and local government executives and their interactions with the bureaucracy and the legislative branches of government. Emphasis is on the political nature of these offices as they interact with the bureaucracy and the legislative branch on policy matters. 

POS 460 - Scope And Methods Of Political Science 

This course covers the history of and major approaches to political science, including the scientific approach. Research design, descriptive statistics, and table analysis will be examined. 

POS 485 - Directed Study In Political Science 

Directed readings in selected areas of political science with regular conferences between instructor and students. 

POS 486 - Internship In Political Science 

Open to any eligible student, regardless of major, meeting stated requirements in any of the available internship programs, most notably the Georgia Governor's Legislative Program. The number of credit hours granted is dependent upon the particular program, academic work, requirements, and nature of participation. 

POS 304 - State and Local Government 

A study of urban and state governments with special emphasis upon intergovernmental relations. 

POS 305 - European Political Systems 

A comparative study of selected European political systems, both in the East and in the West, with special attention to the problem of political change. 

POS 306 - Politics In Russia 

A comprehensive study of the Russian political system with careful attention to the Soviet communist era. Major topics include the role of political parties, institutional changes, political culture, and leadership. 

POS 307 - Politics In Developing Nations 

The study of political institutions, processes and behavior within a comparative perspective. 

POS 310 - Politics And Change In Latin America 

This course examines the processes of political/economic change in Latin America, concentrating on 20th century revolutions. 

POS 312 - Russian Foreign Policy

 A study of the motivations, process, and decisions that characterize Russian foriegn policy. Case studies will include policies toward the former, non-Russian Soviet Republics; West Europe; the United Nations. 

 POS 315 - American Constitutional Law I 

The substantive constitutional law of the separation of powers, judicial review, and the federal system, and the court's policy- making role.

 POS 316 - American Constitutional Law II [also listed as LA 316] 

The substantive constitutional law of due process, including fair trial and criminal procedure, and the court's policy-making role. 

 POS 317 - American Constitutional Law III 

The substantive constitutional law of First Amendment rights, minority rights and the court's policy-making role. 

POS 319 - Public Administration And Public Policy Formation 

A survey of basic problems involved in the development of public policy by government with emphasis on public decisional and organizational theory. 

 POS 320 - The Legislative Process 

A survey of the legislative process including structure, limitations, procedures of state and national legislative agencies. 

POS 321 - American Political Parties And Elections

 A study of the development of American political party systems with special emphasis on contemporary electoral activities of political parties. 

POS 322 - Judicial Process [also listed as LA 322] 

An introduction to the American judicial process, judicial review, or the philosophies of law, the role of the courts in the political system in both national and state governments. 

POS 323 - Judicial Administration 

A study of the administration of justice. Emphasis is on court organization and politics, selection of personnel, legal problems, and the management of the civil and criminal judicial system. 

POS 324 - Administrative Law and Government Administrative Law

 is an overview of the administrative law process with the focus upon the formation and execution of public policy. Special emphasis is placed upon protecting the interests of all parties involved in the complex process of administrative law, policy formation and implementation. 

POS 325 - Legal Research [also listed as LA 325] 

Concentrates on developing research skills necessary for a knowledge, appreciation and ability to function effectively within the legal system. 

POS 326 - Politics And The Supreme Court 

This course reviews landmark decisions of the Supreme Court and addresses issues related to the political climate surrounding such decisions. The political ramifications of Supreme Court cases are emphasized. 

 POS 327 - International Law 

Readings, cases, lectures and research on the functioning of the legal structures in the international system with special emphasis on the relation between law and politics. 

POS 328 - Trial Advocacy [also listed as LA 328] 

A course that covers all aspects of presenting a case in trial. Students develop effective methods for analyzing and preparing cases for presentation in trial. Students will learn and use basic technical skills necessary as members of the University's Mock Trial Team at tournaments sponsored by the American Mock Trial Association. 

POS 330 - Political Socialization And Public Opinion 

Basic course designed to make the elementary and secondary school teacher aware of the politically relevant education of his students. 

 POS 332 - Women And Politics 

The course reviews the attitudes toward and participation by women in the political arena. It focuses on the political factors that have encouraged or deterred women in politics in the American political system as well as in additional selected political systems. 

POS 340 - International Politics \

A study of the major international developments since World War II. The focus will be on the Cold War, the United Nations, emergence of the Third World and conflict areas of the world. 

POS 360 - Political Change 

This course will examine the sources and methods of political change. Topics will include terror, assassination, coup d'etat, guerilla warfare, mass movements, revolutions, and relevant current events. 

POS 380 - Politics in Southern Africa 

A study of the domestic and international politics of South Africa from the pre-colonial period to the present day. Nations to be examined include South Africa, Lesotho, Swaziland, Botswana, Malawi, Zimbabwe, Zambia, Mozambique, Angola, and Southwest Africa- Namibia.
