The Health Assessment Performance Examination (HAPE) documents the student's ability to perform a comprehensive assessment with a generally healthy individual. The purpose of health assessment is to gather client-related data in an organized, systematic way so as to identify actual or potential health problems, and to assist the client to maintain an optimum level of wellness. It includes a health history, physical examination, and a summary and analysis of the data. Students are tested on their ability to identify normal and abnormal heart and breath sounds, reproduced on an audio tape.

The Teaching Performance Examination documents the student's ability to identify a client's learning needs; to prepare a teaching plan which outlines the objectives, content and methodology to be used for the brief teaching episode; and to present the material in a live situation. The TPE incorporates both theory of the teaching process and its implementation at the beginning professional level of competence. Students must be knowledgeable in both areas and be prepared to assess, plan, implement, and evaluate an actual client teaching episode.

The Professional Performance examination is a 2 1/2 day examination based entirely on videotaped simulated nursing situations. The videotaped modules were designed and produced specifically for the PPE. It tests the application of knowledge related to the dimensions of professional nursing practice: Collaboration, Leadership, Management of Client Care, Research Process in Clinical Practice, Clinical Decision Making, and Relating with others. It focuses on complex nursing situations that take place in a variety of health care settings: hospitals, public agencies, homes, schools, etc.
